REFINED ROADSTER – R NINE T

When BMW Motorrad launched the R nineT in 2013, it was clearly more than just a roadster based on a classic role model. From the outset, the R nineT combined classic motorcycle design and modern technology with sophisticated craftsmanship, as demonstrated by the aluminium fuel tank with brushed side surfaces, for example. In numerous components, the model also reflected the R nineT team's fond attention to detail. The new R nineT likewise radiates this boutique manufacturing character, supported by a range of optimised features.

SUPREME ON ALL TERRAIN – THE NEW BMW R 1200 GS

The unique overall concept of the R 1200 GS, with its down-to-earth character and powerful high-torque engine, thrills a large number of motorcycle fans all over the world. The R nineT Urban G/S draws on the genes of the very first and legendary BMW R 80 G/S of 1980, transported into the modern era with contemporary technology in the form of a classic enduro-style BMW motorcycle with boxer engine.

K 1600 GTL: UNRIVALLED LUXURY

SIX-CYLINDERS OF PURE BMW K 1600 GT

Six-cylinder in-line engines have been an integral part of BMW automobile history and brand identity for more than 80 years. With the launch of the K 1600 GT and GTL in 2010, BMW Motorrad not only succeeded in skilfully transferring this tradition to the motorcycle area but was also able to position the lightest and most compact 6-cylinder in-line engine for motorcycles with a capacity of over 1,000 cubic centimetres on the market.

INSIDE MARIA COSTELLO’S WOMEN ONLY TRACK

Squash Falconer has climbed Aconcagua in Argentina, summited Cho Oyu in Tibet. She once rode a motorbike to France, scaled Mt Blanc and then flew from the summit, all in a normal day for Squash! Her numerous adventures often involve bikes, but they’re usually a bit more off-road orientated, so it was about time she hit the track.

Here are her impressions after heading onto the famous Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire with racer Maria Costello and 50 other women on a BMW Track Day.

A LAP OF HONOUR FOR DÄHNE

The 2016 Classic TT saw Helmut Dähne  reunited with his BMW R 90 S for a lap of honour, 40 years after winning the Production TT. The Classic TT not only celebrates recent victories but also the most spectacular accomplishments of the past. At this year’s meet-up of two wheel legends, this year we looked back to 1976. This was when Helmut Dähne and Hans Otto Butenuth won the 1000 cc class of the Production TT on a BMW R 90 S. Since then, Dähne and his teammate Butenuth – who passed away in 1997 – have belonged to the exclusive group of riders able to enter their names in the winners’ list of the iconic Isle of Man TT. Now 71-years-old Dähne, returned to the scene of his great triumph at the 2016 Classic TT. 40 years after his victory, he was able to ride his original BMW racer around the Isle of Man – this time by way of a lap of honour, not as fast as in 1976 but undoubtedly to the applause of thrilled spectators once again!

LIVING THE DREAM - ROOKIE TO RIDER

I guess it started in the early 1980s, and after decades of admiring and longing for the various generations of BMW RTs, I decided the time had come, to live the dream and who better than BMW Rider Training in Royston to get me there? That was how, after doing my detailed homework on training providers, I ended up at BMW Rider Training in Royston.

To be honest it was a bit of a gamble, would I even like it? Would I be able to learn new skills, or would I be too entrenched in the way I do things? Maybe it would be a nice distraction for a few days, and finally I’d put the idea to rest? Maybe I would decide I didn't like road riding, maybe my dyslexia would impact my learning, or maybe I would just fail.

Lac Rose was the last stage of the Paris-Dakar in the heady days of mid-80s rally-raids.
It is the French name of the rose-coloured Retba salt lake, located 35 km North East of Dakar and less than one mile from the Atlantic coast and was the last stage of the Paris-Dakar race in 1985.

Following the many challenging stages through the African desert, the event podium was located at the side of the lake, the winners received their awards amid the roars of enthusiastic fans.

You’ve parked some cars and motorbikes on your lawn and you’ve invited your mates to race up your driveway in some classic race cars.
Well, if your name is Lord March and you own the vast historic Goodwood Estate in Chichester, that becomes a far more appealing concept. Especially when the ‘driveway’ is a legendary 1.2-mile long uphill tarmac ribbon that's hosted the most iconic cars and drivers in the world...

RIDING IN THAILAND IS... DIFFERENT. AND DIFFERENT CAN BE VERY GOOD.

Richard Millington, Director of Motorrad Tours, explains why you shouldn't just think of Bangkok and beaches when you're considering Thailand:

I have just returned from my third time riding through Thailand. If you were asked to list the world’s top ten motorcycle touring destinations, I doubt that Thailand would make your list, but if it didn't, you would be missing out on something truly amazing.

Think of Thailand and you probably think of sunny islands, great beaches and dodgy clubs. You would be right - Thailand has all this and more, but nearly everyone lands in Bangkok and heads south to the sunshine and the infamous tourist destinations. They are all going the wrong way.

MOTORRAD STORIES OF 2015: NEW RIDER FINALIST - EDDIE LYNCH.

“I knew my first bike had to be a BMW, I had ordered my F 800 R before I had started my DAS course, I passed my test first time with flying colours so all that was left was to wait for delivery of my bike. It was a lovely winter day (22nd Dec 2015) it was time to go get my bike! I was excited yet nervous, was I doing the right thing? Could I live without a car? I was sure I was ready. Anyway the handover went well and I even found a spot next to Loch Ness where I could take a couple of photos on my phone. I was loving it but I was only 20 miles into my 200 mile journey home.

MOTORRAD STORIES - NEW RIDER OF THE YEAR: JOSEPH GRIMES

“It started as a bit of a passing comment during a ride round the sights of Donegal, ‘wouldn’t it be great to take the bike to the Alps and back’, not a wise statement to make to someone who’s only had a licence less than a year. Back home the more I thought about the notionthe more it was being planned. What route? What countries? How long? Tunnel or ferry? Where to stay? Where do I start planning a trip like this?Myself and a mate had made our minds up, Europe here we come.

MOTORRAD STORIES OF 2015: ADVENTURE WINNER - GRAHAM PRYKE

“Alaska in August was… hot. Especially in full biker gear unwrapping the metres of plastic swathing my 1982 BMW R 80 ST, fresh from its packing crate, in the parking lot of the Fed-Ex building at Anchorage airport. Eighteen months previously I’d started prepping the bike (that is, completely rebuilding it) to fulfil my dream of riding the James W. Dalton Highway (the ‘Haul Road’), in the far north of this huge and sparsely populated state of the USA.

MYSTIC MOTORRAD'S PREDICTIONS FOR 2016

With the highs and lows of 2015 firmly in the wing mirrors, it's time to turn our attentions to the coming months. We asked the team here at BMW Motorrad UK to gaze into their crystal balls, dust off the tarot cards and make some completely unscientific predictions about what we think will happen in 2016*.

*Please don't hold us to these!
